One way to start eating healthier is find a healthier substitute for your favorite foods. One example is pizza. If you love pizza, instead of buying a frozen one or ordering out, why not make your own? You can use a lean or extra lean ground meat to make your own Italian sausage topping. To lower the calories and fat, you can also use turkey pepperoni on your pizza. Instead of a regular thick crust, use a thin crust whole wheat pizza blank. Eating better quality food will satisfy your hunger and you won’t be ready to take a nap after having your meal.
Find a healthier substitute for your favorite snacks. If your go to snack in the afternoon is a candy bar, why not have an apple with two tablespoons of peanut butter instead? The candy bar would give you a temporary rise in your energy level but be ready for the crash that is coming. With the apple and peanut butter, you are getting a fruit in for the day and getting some protein with the peanut butter. And you won’t have to worry about your energy level dropping after this snack.
The best exercise you can do is the one you will continue with. If the only reason you are running is you think it will speed your weight loss, you will probably not keep doing it for the long term. Choosing an exercise that you enjoy and challenges you is what you should aim for. Exercises you could do are walking, cardio workouts like step classes or even doing some weight training. Even if you exercise, remember to do your best to become active in other parts of your life. If you have a desk job, try standing while doing some of your tasks. Instead of watching the kids run and play, why don’t you join them. If you have hiking trails where you live, go take a hike. Your goal with exercise should not just be to burn calories, but to get fit in order to do other physical activities in your life. If you are new to exercise, you may be tired at first. But if you continue with it, you’ll get to the point where you look forward to it and it gives you energy.
